Extreme E to make one-off return in Saudi Arabia ahead of Extreme H debut

Extreme E will return for a one-off event dubbed the ‘Final Lap’ ahead of the inaugural FIA Extreme H World Cup competition in Saudi Arabia next month.
Taking place on October 4-5, the event will follow the format of a typical Extreme E round, with eight teams taking part in a series of four-car races, and a round winner being declared at the end of each day.

The event will draw the curtain on five years of the all-electric off-road series, which began with a five-round calendar in 2021, before expanding to 10 rounds in 2023, albeit still across five locations.

In that time it visited Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Greenland, Sardinia, the UK, Chile, and Uruguay, and conducted environmental and ecological ‘Legacy Programs’ at each race location – work that is ongoing to this day.

Rosberg X Racing, helmed by 2016 Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg, won the first and third seasons with Johan Kristoffersson, and Molly Taylor (Season 1) and Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky as its drivers.

Lewis Hamilton’s X44 outfit won the second season with Sebastien Loeb and Christina Gutierrez, while the 2024 season was curtailed after four rounds in order to focus resources on the imminent arrival of Extreme H, with Veloce Racing's Kevin Hansen and Taylor at the top of the standings after races in Saudi Arabia and Scotland.

Ahead of the final two Extreme E races, Kristoffersson stands as the series' most-successful male driver with nine wins, while his Season 1 teammate Taylor has eight victories across her spells with RXR and Veloce. RXR leads teams with 9 victories – ahead of second-best Veloce with five – an unassailable lead, at least in the Extreme E era, after it announced last December that it would not be continuing in the series going forwards.

After the Final Lap event, Extreme E and its Odyssey 21 battery-electric race car will be retired and succeeded by Extreme H with the hydrogen-electric Pioneer 25, which has been subject to an intense on-track test and development program in France and Scotland over the last two years.

After running at the Scotland X-Prix last year in between Extreme E race sessions, the Pioneer 25 made its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier this summer with Catie Munnings, Gutierrez, Klara Andersson, and Amanda Sorensen behind the wheel.
