WRC launches new spectator safety campaign

The campaign debuted on WRC’s social channels with a hard-hitting video that combines footage of risky fan behaviour with candid reactions from the championship’s top drivers.

“We are pushing to the limits. We know the road is closed and that the people are safe – even if it goes wrong, we’re risking our lives, not anybody else’s,” explains 2019 world champion Ott Tänak, who also called fans standing in exposed areas “super stupid”.

Eight-time champion Sébastien Ogier added: “It’s amazing to see people who don’t really realise the speed those cars are going, and if it goes wrong, obviously they would probably lose their life – but for us we will have that in our mind forever too.”

Other drivers echoed the call. Elfyn Evans stressed the need for spectators to avoid the outside of high-speed corners, while Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville warned that ‘the slightest mistake at the speed we are going can make a massive crash’.

The campaign’s launch coincides with FIA Volunteer Month, highlighting the vital role played by thousands of volunteer marshals who help keep rallies safe worldwide.

The WRC’s message is clear: rally fans are a vital part of the sport’s atmosphere, but the safety of everyone on the stages must come first.
