Wheatley joins Hyundai Motorsport as WRC Sporting Director

The Briton joins the Alzenau-based team with immediate effect in the newly created role and will attend this week’s Central European Rally (16 - 19 October), followed by FORUM8 Rally Japan and Rally Saudi Arabia, before taking on a full programme in 2026.

Reporting to Hyundai Motorsport President Cyril Abiteboul, Wheatley will support the team’s senior management group - including François-Xavier Demaison, Pablo Marcos and Jan de Jongh - across sporting and operational matters. His remit also includes analysing upcoming FIA regulation changes to help shape Hyundai’s long-term rally strategy.

Wheatley brings almost three decades of WRC experience from senior roles at M-Sport Ford and the FIA, where he most recently served as Road Sport Director overseeing the WRC, World RX and World Rally-Raid Championships.

“Andrew’s appointment as WRC Sporting Director is an important strengthening of Hyundai Motorsport’s leadership,” said Abiteboul. “He brings a wealth of experience that will bolster our WRC operations, supporting the crews and senior management in pursuit of success.”

“This is a team that has the experience, skill, and strong driver line-up to win world championships,” added Wheatley. “My goal is to support every department and help drive our performance forward.”

Hyundai arrives at Central European Rally aiming to reduce its 125-point deficit to Toyota Gazoo Racing in the manufacturers' title race.
