IHRA Stock Car Series at Newport Rescheduled for June 13
Some of the toughest racers around are coming to Newport Speedway for the IHRA Stock Car Series. Due to the weekend weather forecast, the race has been moved to Saturday, June 13.
Kyle Dudley, who won the inaugural IHRA Stock Car Series race at Pulaski County Motorsports Park, will see if he can conquer the high-banked, 4/10-mile Tennessee short track. He’s one of multiple short-track aces signed up for the 125-lap Late Model Sportsman showdown.
Dudley’s fellow Virginian, Derrick Lancaster, is coming off a podium finish at the most recent IHRA Stock Car Series event at Cordele, Georgia.
East Tennessee drivers will try to protect the “home turf.” Reigning Tennessee state champion Zeke Shell and Newport Speedway track champion Lance Gatlin promise to present a formidable challenge.
A trio of North Carolina hotshoes — Kaleb Pressley, Tate Fogleman and the veteran Lee Tissot — are also among the favorites. Pressley is the grandson of the legendary Late Model Sportsman race Bob Pressley, and Tissot is a former winner on Newport’s high-banked bullring in both cars and trucks.
The track has a rich history dating back to 70-plus years when it hosted NASCAR’s top series. Hall of Fame driver Fireball Roberts won races in 1956 and 1957. It also served as the home track for two-time national Late Model Sportsman champion L.D. Ottinger in the 1970s.
Back to the present day, there’s also a strong field of entries for the 100-lap Pro Late Model race.
It’s headlined by Mark Day, who will bring the familiar No. 8 to the fast short track. Joshua Horniman and Taylor Hull are among the others expected to battle it out for the checkered flag.
Don’t miss out on your chance to see some of the greatest short track stars in the nation battle it out on a track which features great racing and amazing scenery with the Smoky Mountains as the backdrop. Click here to buy tickets for this exciting night of race.
