Funny Car driver Tim Wilkerson to be inducted into Illinois Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026
The Illinois Sports Hall of Fame will induct NHRA Funny Car racer Tim Wilkerson into its Class of 2026, honoring his outstanding career and lasting impact on the sport of drag racing.
A native of Springfield, Ill., Wilkerson has built a remarkable legacy in the NHRA as one of the sport’s most respected and versatile competitors. A 22-time Funny Car winner with 25 career victories, Wilkerson captured two wins at the prestigious NHRA U.S. Nationals (2003, 2021) and came within a burned piston of a third title in 2012. He also finished second in the Funny Car championship standings in 2008.
Widely admired across the racing community, Wilkerson stood out as one of the rare owner-tuner-drivers in an increasingly specialized sport. His hands-on approach, technical expertise, and relentless determination earned him not only victories on the track but also the respect and admiration of fans and competitors alike.
"What a great honor it is, and to be the first drag racer inducted into this hall of fame is especially wonderful," said Wilkerson, who currently tunes for his son Daniel, in the Scag Racing Funny Car. "It's not something I ever expected. It's very exciting, and I'm honored that I'm being recognized for my efforts over the years."
The Illinois Sports Hall of Fame was established to honor the athletes, coaches, teams, and contributors who have shaped the rich history of sports across Illinois. By recognizing excellence at the interscholastic, collegiate, and professional levels, the Hall of Fame preserves these legacies while inspiring future generations.
The 2026 Induction Ceremony will take place on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Springfield, Ill., where Wilkerson and fellow inductees will be formally recognized for their achievements.
