F2 exploring Miami round following postponement of Middle Eastern races
Colton Herta could receive an unexpected home race weekend in Formula 2 as the series explores a potential addition of a U.S. round in Miami in May.
As with Formula 1, Formula 2 and Formula 3 both had to postpone their rounds in the Middle East following the decision not to hold the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian races in April due to ongoing conflict in the region. That leaves a gap in both calendars, with two races having been lost by F2 and one by F3.
With F2 not due to race again until the Monaco Grand Prix in early June, the series has been investigating ways of filling the three-month gap, and RACER understands contact was made earlier this month with the organizers of the Miami Grand Prix to explore a potential spot on the support card from 1-3 May.
Logistically, it would be a significant challenge to add a trans-Atlantic event at such late notice, and Miami already has a number of support categories including the McLaren Trophy America and Porsche Carrera Cup. Not only would sufficient time need to be found in the race weekend schedule, but also the space to house the additional F2 paddock at the Miami International Autodrome.
Should it be possible to arrange for F2 to join the program, it would mark the first race for the series in the United States, either as F2 or under its previous guise as the GP2 Series.
Herta is making his debut in the category this season after making the switch from IndyCar, the 26-year-old competing for Hitech as he looks to gain further understanding of F1 circuits and Pirelli tires alongside his role as third driver for the new Cadillac F1 Team.
A Miami round would also not significantly impact any plans for Herta to compete in the Indianapolis 500 this year. The first day of practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is slated for May 12, and the race itself scheduled for May 24.
A spokesperson for F2 declined to comment on the potential for a Miami round, telling RACER: “We are still working on different options regarding the 2026 F2 and F3 calendars. We will share further information in due time.”
