DTM introduces testing restrictions with focus on sustainability and cost efficiency

The ADAC is continuing to make the structures in the DTM future-oriented and sustainable. Private testing will be limited for drivers and teams in the DTM for the 2024 season. The test restrictions apply with immediate effect and are in place until the finale at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg (18th to 20th October). The measures were developed together with the teams and pursue clear goals: to strengthen the pioneering role of the series with regard to sustainable motorsport, and to increase cost efficiency within the teams.

“Among the economic aspects, the restriction of testing is a big concern for our competitors. It is also essential for the sustainable development of the DTM. Given the rising price of running the cars, restricting testing is an effective means of reducing costs for participants in the short term. Limiting testing will also achieve even greater equal opportunity in the DTM,” says ADAC Motorsport Director Thomas Voss, explaining the reasoning behind the new regulations.

From now on, DTM teams must inform the DTM of any planned test activities. The teams can carry out private tests for the DTM at a maximum five racetracks. This also includes circuits that are not part of the DTM calendar. Within the framework of these tests, DTM drivers may attend private tests on no more than five days. A maximum three sets of tyres are to be used per test day. During race week, private DTM tests at the respective circuit are not permitted. Exceptions to the testing restrictions are events and official test days for other series, as well as tests at which the DTM tyre provided by series partner Pirelli are not used. There are also exceptions for rollouts and other driving-based activities. If there is any doubt whether such activities are permitted, the final decision will be made by the DTM Sporting Board.
