About Charles Richmond:
Charles Richmond, 11th Duke of Richmond and Gordon, CBE DL, is Chairman of the Goodwood Estate Company Limited and founder of the world’s most renowned motorsport events.
He took over management of the Goodwood Estate from his father in West Sussex in 1994 after a career in film and photography – a passion which he still pursues today, with exhibitions held worldwide. His latest exhibition took place at Hamiltons Gallery, Mayfair, from November 2025 – January 2026.
A passion for sport has been at the heart of life on the 11,000 acre estate since 1697, and is home to a racecourse and historic motor circuit; two golf courses; Goodwood Aerodrome and Flying School and one of England’s oldest cricket grounds as well as a 4,000-acre organic Home Farm; the sustainable restaurant Farmer, Butcher, Chef; The Kennels (members’ clubhouse); Goodwood Hotel; Hound Lodge and Goodwood House. The estate has also been the home of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars since 2003.
One of West Sussex’s major employers with over 750 permanent employees, Goodwood adds an additional 1,500 casual workers around the peak season to run its events and hospitality. A recent economic impact study by LSE showed that Goodwood contributes £444m nationally, with a local regional socio-economic contribution of £323m. With committed support for both local and global causes, Goodwood’s charity donations have amounted to over £900,000 per annum.
Charles Richmond created Festival of Speed (1993) and Revival (1998), bringing motor racing back to Goodwood after nearly three decades’ absence. The Festival of Speed is considered the best and biggest car culture event in the world, whilst the Revival is the most celebrated historic motor racing event – uniquely setting the whole experience in the 50’s and 60’s. Revive & Thrive as its theme, the Revival was the first motorsport event in the world to mandate the use of synthetic fuel.
Focussed on the three pillars of Art, Landscape and Learning, the not-for-profit Goodwood Art Foundation, a new destination for contemporary Art in the UK, opened in May 2025 and received the Cultural & Social Contribution Award at the 2025 Walpole British Luxury Awards. In July 2026, he announced the launch of the Goodwood Road Racing Club of America, bringing Goodwood to the United States for the very first time.
Charles Richmond received the CBE in 2024 for services to heritage, sport and charity and was appointed to be the Chairman of the King’s Trust International 10th Anniversary Campaign.
