Third edition of the Sustainable Championships index launched. ABB FIA FORMULA E World Championship crowned most sustainable global motorsport championship for third year running.

Enovation Consulting has launched the third annual report of the Sustainable Championships Index™ (SChI™) revealing the latest results in the motorsport’s race for sustainability.

Part of the Sustainable Motorsport Index™ family of indices, the SChI™ assesses and ranks the sustainability performance of 106 global two and four-wheeled championships against six key dimensions of sustainability.

These dimensions include certifications, accreditations and awards, environmental criteria, social criteria, engagement and partnerships, and approaches to sustainability. The third edition report includes the scores of two new championships participating for the first time: F1 Academy and FIM E-XPLORER World Cup.

The Index’s bespoke methodology, has been developed by Enovation Consulting in collaboration with Professor of Strategy and Sustainability at UCL School of Management; Professor Paolo Taticchi. It is the only global performance system that measures and reports on the sustainability practices publicly disclosed against the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and the ESG framework.

For the third consecutive year, ABB FIA Formula E World Championship takes pole position in the SChI™ with four cups. Seven championships scored points for the first time, and several championships including NTT IndyCar Series and FIA World Rally Championships moved a significant number of places up the leader board.

This year sustainability performance increased most in relation to environmental criteria, and the points awarded across any area were for actions around renewable energy and energy efficiency at headquarters and/or events. These gains reflect the industry’s continued support for the environment and its foundation in technological innovation.

Speaking on the publication of the Index, Dr. Cristiana Pace said: “This year’s Sustainable Championships Index™ clearly shows the ongoing commitment of the motorsport industry to improve sustainability practices and remain accountable by transparently and publicly disclosing their work. With two new championships making it into the index and 10 championships jumping from the low-performance category (0 cups) to the medium-low category (1 cup), in just 12 months, we clearly see the benefit of creating a system to disclose and rank the ESG practices of motorsport stakeholders.

We are encouraged by the work being done throughout the industry and congratulate all those involved in striving to improve their best practice. We are also excited about seven championships beginning their sustainability journeys in 2023 and scoring points in our index for the first time: F1 Academy, FIA Karting European Championship, FIA Karting World Championship, FIM E-XPLORER, FIA European Rally Trophy, Indy NXT and Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli North America. A clear sign of the commitment from the motorsport industry to sustainability.

About the Sustainable Motorsport Index™

An industry first, the SMI™ family of indices is the only global performance system of its kind, benchmarking and comparing stakeholders across both circuits and championships based on publicly disclosed data. The findings within the reports identify and highlight disclosed best practices from the industry, showcasing to all  stakeholders how they can adopt and improve their own sustainability performance, with the aim to improve performance across the entire motorsport sector. The fourth iteration of the Sustainable Circuits Index™, reporting on the sustainability performance of global motorsport venues, is due to be published later in the year.
