Supercars to undertake brake system analysis
A Triple Eight Ford will roll out at Queensland Raceway this week as Supercars undertakes brake system analysis.
The spare Triple Eight Mustang will be fitted with additional sensors on the entire brake system, in the effort to gain a greater understanding of the system.
Supercars has been closely monitoring brakes in recent rounds, with teams encountering a number of issues, most recently at the Repco Bathurst 1000.
The Triple Eight Ford will be fitted with infrared sensors that measure the likes of the inner and outer surfaces of the disc, as well as other pressures and temperatures.
“The Gen3 cars were designed with limited sensors on the brake system,” Supercars Chief Motorsport Officer Tim Edwards told Supercars.com.
“The Gen3 cars were designed with limited sensors on the brake system,” Supercars Chief Motorsport Officer Tim Edwards told Supercars.com.
“We're fully instrumenting a car so we can get a far greater understanding of the brake system, which neither the teams or Supercars actually have at the moment.
“Obviously the challenges we've had over the last few rounds highlighted the fact that we need to learn more about the brake system.
“Triple Eight have been very generous in supporting us to do this test, by converting their spare car to put extra instrumentation on it.”
Tuesday’s running allows Supercars Technical to assess all parts of the brake circuit in a non-race environment.
“In a race situation, even if you allowed extra sensors, you would only have a limited number of them,” Edwards continued.
“As soon as you start putting sensors on the outside of the discs, for example, they’re in vulnerable areas. When a wheel is being changed, you would knock that sensor.
"So for a test like this, we can carefully place the wheel over sensors to where they’re effectively on the outer face. It's not somewhere where you can put them in a race application.”
The 2026 Repco Supercars Championship resumes at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 on November 6-8.
