Ex-Penske team manager Moyer joins Arrow McLaren

The most coveted free agent in the IndyCar Series wasn’t a driver, but rather, it was ex-Team Penske team manager Kyle Moyer, who has joined Arrow McLaren where he’ll be reunited with former driver Tony Kanaan who serves as team principal.

The IndyCar veteran spent the majority of his career at Andretti Global before making a surprise move to Penske in 2015, and was one of three leaders released by Penske in May. Moyer’s departure was a shock to many in the series, and with his surprise availability, it wasn’t a question of which team would make him an offer; Moyer would have his pick of teams to choose from, and he’ll start on June 30 as Arrow McLaren’s new director of competition, joining ex-Chip Ganassi Racing team manager Scott Harner who came onboard during the offseason as director of race operations.

Known for his racing savvy and team-building ways, Moyer has legions of fans from wherever he’s worked – from drivers like Kanaan at Andretti to mechanics and engineers – who want to be part of whatever he’s involved in, and once this weekend’s race at Road America is completed, he’ll make his Arrow McLaren debut at the upcoming Iowa Speedway test.

As well, Kanaan will step off of Nolan Siegel’s timing stand and float among the team’s three cars while Moyer steps in to mentor Siegel and serve as his race strategist, a role he played for Scott McLaughlin at Penske.

“This is a relationship I made in my racing career, and these are the relationships that count,” Kanaan told RACER. “This is someone I trust and worked a lot together with and we have the same goals.”
