The Titan Fuel Tanks Story—Double The Size Of Your Tow Vehicle's Stock Tank!
Imagine your next long haul on a race weekend with a fuel tank that is double the size of the stock tank in your current tow vehicle.
Now, imagine that this much larger fuel tank is affordable, and a direct bolt-in, with no cutting or fabrication of any sort required.
And if you run a racing business—selling to racers—the company that makes this product is looking for dealers!
When it started in 2003, Titan Fuel Tanks committed itself to designing a lightweight tank, so that diesel truck owners could go farther for longer, even when towing a race car hauler. The answer was fuel tanks made with XLHDPE—Cross-linked High Density Polyethylene—molecules of the polymer weaved tightly together in a cross-link, making Titan fuel tanks durable, safe, strong, and yet lightweight.
As marketing director for Titan Fuel Tanks, based in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Mike DeFord works in a company renowned as an innovative industry leader in high-capacity, military-grade polymer aftermarket fuel tanks. The company also manufacturers fuel cells, fuel cans, jugs, and accessories, and tow-vehicle backup.
DeFord has been at the company for 6 years. “I have worked in racing and the performance automotive aftermarket my entire life. 2021 will mark 30 years for me. I grew up in a racing family and always wanted to work in racing. It is much more than work,” he says, “it is my passion.”
According to DeFord, “Titan was started 18 years ago by a man who was always traveling and towing a trailer, and he hated having to stop every 250 miles to refuel his truck. From there, the company has grown into the largest fuel tank manufacturer in the U.S. making replacement and auxiliary tanks.”
All manufacturing is done at the company’s Idaho facility. Every aspect of the products Titan offers is made in America. He explained the cross-linked polymer tanks as “tougher than steel. Our material does not rust or corrode. And because it is so tough, we are the only company in the world that backs their tanks with an unconditional lifetime warranty.”
And each XXL replacement tank is uniquely designed for each specific make and model of vehicle. “Combined with our manufacturing process, this allows our engineers to design tanks that use every bit of free space, while being safe and easy to fit,” he says.
Currently, Titan only offers replacement and auxiliary tanks for diesel trucks; no gasoline tanks are available. “It is not by choice,” he explains. “The EPA and CARB have regulations that make it virtually impossible to do tanks for gasoline vehicles that would be affordable. We do offer transfer tanks for gasoline, but until or if regulations change, that is all that is legal.”
DeFord relates that the company takes a personal interest in supporting the racing industry. “We pride ourselves in working with and supporting the average racer," he said. "Working with racers that are normal guys, usually working normal jobs, gives us pride but it also provides results. The Return on Investment/ROI is usually much greater than with large professional teams and drivers. Our drivers win races across all disciplines, from IMCA dirt track, road racing, off-road, rally and drag racing.
“Winning is great, but the most impactful part of it is helping drivers live their dreams,” said DeFord.
Having larger fuel tanks or having an extra fuel tank for the racer tow vehicle is an obvious upgrade for racers’ trucks, he notes. “We all tow our cars to the track; having to stop to refuel slows the trip down. Being able to go further, twice as far between fill-ups, means you are getting to get to the track quicker, not having to fight for a pump as often, and then you get home faster.”
So why doesn’t every truck have one? DeFord points out that not everyone knows about the company and what it can offer – yet. “That’s why we became partners with EPARTRADE and why we partner with racers to represent us on the racetrack.
"Everyone wants more fuel capacity, but most think that it is not an option. Even if they think it is, there’s a huge misconception that it’s expensive, hard to do, and not legal. But the truth is that our average mid-ship replacement tank for a ¾ or 1-ton diesel truck is $1300 for a tank that is double the size of the stock tank.” He adds, “It is a direct bolt-in, there is no cutting, no fabrication of any sort, the old tank simply gets dropped, the sending unit is removed, put into our tank and reinstalled. On the legal side of things, our tanks meet and exceed SPE, CARB and DOT regulations, and they are legal in all 50 states.”
And installation of Titan tanks is an easy process, he attests. “They are direct fit, meaning that you do not have to cut or fabricate anything. The DEF system stays in place; it can be done with hand tools and a torque wrench. The most common issues that we see are in removing the stock tank and disconnecting the connections. About half of our sales are going into a truck that has more than 25k miles, and road grime builds up. It is the normal type stuff. The biggest complication is educating people, to show them how easy it is.”
DeFord stresses that quality should be part of the buying decision for anyone considering less expensive fuel tank options than Titan. “It’s no different than anything, there are ‘okay products’ and then there are ‘great products.’ Our warranty speaks to that and it speaks to how good and how tough our tanks are. The Unconditional Lifetime Warranty covers anything,” he enthuses.
As a growing company, Titan Fuel Tanks is always looking for new dealers, DeFord reports. “Especially on the racing side of the industry. 78% of customers that walk through the doors of a race shop own a truck that they use to tow their race car to the track. Our tanks are an obvious choice for racers, which means they are an obvious choice for race shops to sell.” And getting set-up with Titan is quick and easy, he points out. “Once a shop is set-up, it’s added to our Dealer Locator on our website. That page is daily in the top 5 pages visited on our site, and we also have marketing resources, spiffs and perks for our dealers.”
In short, Titan fuel tanks are a must-have, just waiting for every tow vehicle in grassroots racing.
